How to Choose a Used Mobility Scooter

People who have difficulty getting around have found that mobility scooters are wonderful aids. A medical mobility scooter can return the ability to freely move around but may be too costly for you. A possible alternative to buying a new scooter may be to purchase a used scooter at a much more affordable cost.

As some insurance companies may cover much of the cost of a scooter, find out from your insurance company if this is the case. If you need help with mobility, this is the optimal path to take if possible. But if there is no help from your insurance company, you can spend less by buying a pre-owned mobility scooter. Buying a used mobility scooter is fairly safe. Even though they could have been customized for the preceding rider they are easy to re-modify to your particular needs, and mobility scooters are built to last for many years. Still, before you purchase one consider the the guidelines below.

The battery is the primary consideration when purchasing a pre-owned mobility scooter. You should always check the power source, so you’ll need to have the present owner charge it up. A new battery can be bought but the battery must be charged to try out the scooter to make sure it is suitable. The tires are the next consideration. Once again, you can easily change the tires, but you need some that are okay to use until then. For use on paved surfaces or indoors, small, untreaded tires are adequate. For using on terrain that is rougher, you will need a bigger tire with more tread.

Your third consideration should be the scooter’s seat. It must be comfortable and well-designed. Once again, seats can be upgraded if need be, but you will want a comfy seat to use the scooter straight away. Things to think about when looking at a seat are whether you would rather have a seat covered in cloth or vinyl. Vinyl can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth but can be hot and uncomfortable in warmer weather. Cloth covered seats are more comfortable but harder to keep clean.  Be aware though that for extended periods, any seat will become uncomfortable.

There are options to substitute or upgrade the majority of the different parts. Thus, you can modify the scooter in line with your particular needs. The tires, the seat, the battery and the charger are some of the various parts that are interchangeable on a mobility scooter.

It’s a good idea to discuss the scooter with the present owner. In this way you can find out how the scooter has been used and if there are issues you need know about. Don’t forget that you can change out many of the parts of the used mobility scooter that you purchase!
